Are you ready to transform your mind, body, and soul so that you can expand deeply and express yourself fully?

Kundalini Yoga, or ‘the yoga of awareness,’ is a powerful ancient practice that combines breath, movement, and sound to channel your vital energy and unlock your true nature. It’s not hyperbole to say that Kundalini Yoga Teacher Training is a potent vehicle to realize your life’s purpose—and as a Kundalini teacher, you’ll be well-equipped to help guide others to do the same.

That all sounds pretty incredible, right? But what does the practice of Kundalini Yoga really entail—and is it the right fit for you?

Whether you’re discovering Kundalini Yoga for the first time or you’re exploring the benefits of an online Kundalini Yoga Teacher Training Program, here’s everything you need to know about this life-changing spiritual and physical practice:

What Is Kundalini Yoga?

At its essence, Kundalini Yoga is the practice of transforming consciousness by connecting us to the divine energy within us—and unlocking greater inner awareness in the process.

In Sanskrit, Kundalini means “coiled serpent;” early gurus taught that we are born with divine energy coiled at the base of our spine. Through the practice of Kundalini Yoga, we can awaken this energy and connect to our higher power. If you’ve heard of “awakening the Kundalini Serpent,” it is all about this divine Kundalini energy, waiting to move like a snake through the seven chakras, out of our crown, and beyond, bringing us into total energetic alignment—ready to embrace our highest power.

Yogi Bhajan brought the practice of Kundalini from India to western culture in the 1970s, increasing awareness and accessibility of these ancient teachings while doing so. It’s important to state that recent allegations have surfaced accusing Yogi Bhajan of sexual, physical, and emotional abuse. We support these voices and believe those who are speaking up. It’s also critical to note that while Yogi Bhajan did bring Kundalini Yoga to the West, he is not the founder of the practice. The spiritual teachings of Kundalini Yoga date back to 1,000 B.C, and Kundalini Yoga remains a profound way to achieve transformation as we move energy through the body, tap into limitless joy and love, and, ultimately, discover our divine essence and truth.

Understanding The Elements Of Kundalini Yoga

One of the things that sets Kundalini Yoga apart from other yoga styles is the emphasis on sound and breathwork over physical alignment (though asana does still play an essential role in the practice.) Chanting, meditation, breathing techniques, and postures all come together to purposefully affect energetic change in the mind, body, and spirit.

Kundalini Yoga consists of kriyas or a series of specific physical postures, meditations, chants, and dynamic breathwork. There are thousands of kriyas, each working towards a desired outcome, but every kriya ultimately facilitates energetic movement through the body to bring greater awareness of Self.

In the physical body, kriyas strengthen the nervous system, balance the glandular system, purify the body, and calm the mind. Don’t be surprised if some kriyas create a deep sense of connection, joy, and bliss, while others bring up angst or discomfort as we confront the Ego’s grip on our consciousness. What’s most important is to know that all kriyas help move us towards enlightenment as we step into our highest calling.

Whether it’s through physical movement or a mantra, repetition is another vital part of any Kundalini Yoga class. That’s because repetition facilitates the flow of energy through the body as we release stored negative patterns of thinking and instead vibrate at higher frequencies. The use of chants, for example, sends a chemical reaction to your brain that elevates your mood and creates an abundant, empowered state of being.
